The Crossley began its life at Shawnigan Lake, BC where it
provided electricity for the townsite and a sawmill.
In the early 50's the Crossley was purchased by the McQuillans
and moved to their gravel pit operation on the Cumberland road where
it provided power for the screening plant.
In the 60's the Crossley was retired when Provincial electricity
became available along the Cumberland road.
LaFarge North America who subsequently purchased the gravel pit
maintained the Crossley for Public viewing.
In the mid 90's the land the Crossley occupied was expropriated
by the Ministry of Highways as part of the new Island Highway.
The Club had been actively searching for a new home for the
Crossley when the opportunity of the Tarling property appeared.
The concrete foundation or as it is referred to, the "engine bed"
is complete, and the concrete floor for the building is in place.
It is planned to move the Crossley before the end of 2003, weather
permitting.
With thanks to Walter Tarling, the City of Courtenay and
assistance from the community, the Crossley has a permanent home.
Upon completion of the project the Club will be recognizing publicly
each individual, organization and business that assisted to make the
CROSSLEY PROJECT possible.
