Glacier Heritage Power and Equipment Club

June 2002

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:   How time has flown. It has been three months since I had to do this. The Club has been very busy! All of the committees are working well and everyone is doing an excellent job. However, there has been one change with the phoning committee. With so many of our members now online, there is less phoning to do. Lois Wright will not longer be calling and I am sure that those on her list will miss hearing her voice. On behalf of all the members, I want to thank Lois for her loyalty and willingness to do her share and more. Joan Lightfoot is looking after the emailing.
This last month, two of our members, Walter Tarling and Eileen Granberg, have passed away. Our deepest sympathy goes out to their families.

Fran York, head of the Food Committee, has submitted a report to the Executive re: Fall Fair Dinner. "All Round Catering" has been given the contract to provide Baron of Beef, salads, gravy, buns and butter. They will deliver, slice and serve on site.

April was a very busy month with the opening of the Farmer's Market. We had an excellent position. Many thanks to Fred Meier and Ron Slemko for doing a wonderful job organizing this event. The following Saturday, we had to prepare the field for planting the oats. Even the weather co-operated. We had a large crew enabling the job to be done in record time. The next day two of our crew were entered in a plowing competition in Duncan. Monday, Len Lightfoot, Bill Granoukos and Dave Paquet seeded and rolled the field. Len also arranged for the use of the land for growing the oats, provided the equipment for sowing and rolling the seed. When it is ready to harvest, he provides the transportation for our threshing at the Fall Fair. Thanks to Dave and his team who put this all together.

A special thanks all of the ladies, who met the challenge of providing baking, not only for all of the events, but for the open house at Walter Tarlings and helping were we could for the Granberg family.

The Club has acquired two new stands for our info boards thanks to Hank Granberg.

The Cumberland parade was great as usual. The participation by such a small village is wonderful. Bud York did a good job as the head of the committee for this event. Several of our members participated including Bill Granoukos, along with Bud, steamed and puffed his engine down the street. This is always a hit. Stu Jacklyn followed with something that "only Stu knows what it is". Then came Dave Paquet with his Hit & Miss, Darrell Wedman, Morley and David Mallard drove their tractors and Hans Luck towed a trailer with several antique items and our Club signs. As everyone in our Club knows, we travel on our stomachs and that most things are judged by the amount of food we consume. Our master chef, Pat Jacklyn assisted by Willie Moore, cooked 60 wieners…so that meant that we had a Gooooooooood Day!!!!!!

UPCOMING EVENTS: The next Executive Meeting is on June 5th, followed by a General Meeting, hosted by Stu and Pat Jacklin, on June 13th. On Monday, July 1st there is the Canada Day Parade. As we felt unwelcome in the past, the participation by our Club is uncertain. Bud will be making the call at our next meeting. July 3rd will be an Executive Meeting and a General Meeting on July11th hosted by Darrell and Donna Wedman.

Price $5200.00. Call Stan Moore at 339-5243

These items will be sold at our Annual Auction, but are too long to transport. It's recommended that anyone who is interested may come to the Moores for viewing. There is 3 pieces of angle iron that are:

Just an early "heads up" from Art Cheshire…Bill, Dennis and Art are hoping to organize a plowing match/gathering for next spring…sort of like they have in Duncan every year. At this time, the details are too sketchy to put anything in print but will surely keep members informed. Dennis and Art attended as Club reps in Duncan. They did not bring back any winning ribbons, but had an enjoyable day with top shelf weather. Extremely tough competitions in the plowing down there as there are real farmers competing.

DKT GENERAL STORE

Those who have not yet dropped by Dan and Maggie Thran's place to have a look at this little store are really missing out.  Dan has done such a great job in recreating an old fashioned building with lots of pieces of old equipment outside for people to look at.  The inside is something else.  It is full of so many items including an old-fashioned kitchen stove, old photographs set in oval frames, wall hangings made from driftwood and bark, and many, many more very interesting antiques.  It is like stepping back in time.  I am sure that Maggie had a lot to do with the interior decorating.

Aside from feasting your eyes, you can also feast your body with a choice of Dan's beef, chicken, pork, eggs along with fresh produce, baked goods, jams, etc. which are all supplied by locals.

It is open on Saturdays and Sundays and well worth a visit.

Just a wise old saying from Will Rogers:
"There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading, on few who learn by observation, and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for  them-
selves."

There has been some discussion on the direction of the Club and whether it is to our advantage to become a Society. Some have already received information on how to form a British Columbia Society under the Society Act. There are several steps to be followed and it gives out some of the requirements with some points about becoming a Society. If you have not seen a copy of this, just call our President, Willie Moore, and she will provide you with a copy. It is important to make an informed decision by members.

What a find!!! It is a very large machine. It has a Cross Mound Motor, 37" front wheels and 66" rear wheels…Chain drive steering down to a screw drive shaft…Ten turns of the steering wheel to turn front wheels one way…Two forward speeds - High-2 3/8 M.P.H. and Low-1 ¾ M.P.H. and one reverse speed-1 1/8 M.P.H.
…Hand clutch and a foot brake…Clutch on the end of crank and includes a belt pulley…Open gear drive on wheels.

It was purchased about a year ago in Houston, BC and is now sitting in Grand Prairie along with a huge collection of other Massey-Harris Tractors and Equipment. This Tractor is in excellent condition and the owners were hoping to have it up and running this spring. Hopefully will hear more on how it is going. Many thanks to Ross Sutherland and Jack Urwin for the pictures and the info. The picture was easy, just hope I got the info down correctly.

Another piece of handy info:  "Never slap a man who's chewin' tobacco." Or try "Always drink upstream from the herd."

I wish to thank Willie Moore and the Directors for sending me gift certificates for a dinner at Woodys Restaurant. It was for winning a contest for our Club Logo. That was nearly 12 years ago…but worth waiting for. The lunch was delicious and we enjoyed each morsel. Best "Chicken Burger" in the Valley and I am a connoisseur on Chicken Burgers.

We have some travelers in our Club. Neil Brady-Brown is off to England again and will be home again soon (or perhaps already is?). Dave Paquet will be off on the 15th to P.E.I and will be followed by Elaine on the 25th. Hope they have great weather. Mary Kamann was back East to visit family and friends. Dennis and Barb Walker are traveling across Canada for a few months. I am sure that others have been or are planning trips. Hopefully they all have a great and safe trip and that we shall hear some tales that can go into our next paper.

HANK GRANBERG WITH HIS OLIVER

This is a 1948 Model 77 Standard Oliver. The Serial Number is 269109 and it is the 9th Tractor built in this series.
The instrument panel was rather Spartan. The Tag to the right of the instruments shows the  Double-H Shift Pattern for the six speed Transmission (two for reverse). The Crank Shaft has shell bearings with shims.

Its History as known, is that the Oliver was originally purchased by Paul Avery who lived on Denman Island. It was used to open farmland on the Island. It was then sold to Pam Brons, also from Denman Island. She, in turn, Donated the tractor to our Club. Along with other donated equipment, it was auctioned off at our annual wind-up dinner and auction. The lucky bidder Hank Granberg ended up with his new Oliver.

This was about two years ago. It required a lot of work, as it was seized solid with a ton of rust. Hank took the pistons out, cleaned and polished and added new rings. The cylinder head had to be machined and Hank had to replace the regulator and the carburetor. This was only a small part that was required. It took Hank with some help of his many good friends about a year to restore it to its present condition.

Well, we have had our first female President, Willie Moore, for six months now. She is doing a credible job and along with lots of membership participating, the Club is running along very smoothly. Her idea of involving more members by creating committees, is working just great. As the club has grown, it takes a lot of cooperation and organization to make things happen. Hopefully we shall have the best Fall Fair ever. Go Willie Go!!!

DO YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF STOOKING CREW???

I believe that this was our first crop that some of the members
learned how to stook.

It was a lot of fun, but was very hot and dusty. We got it done though. Don't know if we are just getting older and lazier…but it seems like we are getting a lot more bundles then what is shown here.

What a motley crew!!!
